Information about Cloisonne

CLOISONNE - Refers to enamelling art applied to useful or decorative items, generally base metals being copper, silver or gold.  Most frequent items are Vases & Pots of all sizes, Trinket Boxes, Pin Trays and Dishes, Cigarette and Tabacco Boxes, Jewelry & Ornaments just to name a few.

The word Cloisonne is of French origin, however the primary makers of these beautiful vintage and antique collectiblers were the Japanese and the Chinese.  Creating cloisonne requires special skills , artistic creativeness along with hours of patience.

There are many steps to creating a cloisonne design, beginning with the base object, applying a fine wire outlining the intricate designs followed by many stages of filling in the areas with liquid glass based colored enamelling and baking at high temperatures.  Finely several stages of polishing to smooth and define the pattern and bring out the luster of the rich colored enamelling.
